Metformin and Thyroid Testing

This is huge. Wonderful breakthrough for advocates for proper thyroid testing. And for patients with PCOS or type 2 diabetes who are also experiencing recurrent miscarriage.

Today this study came out that proves that while taking Metformin (used for type 2 diabetes, PCOS, and other conditions), your TSH is artificially suppressed.

When TSH is low, doctors assume you are hyperthyroid (hyper meaning too much) or that you are taking too much thyroid medication. They want to adjust your dosage based on your TSH.

Or worse, your TSH level shows up right in the middle of the range and your doctor says, “It’s normal. You don’t need any thyroid medication.” But in reality, your TSH is artificially low because you’re taking metformin. So you continue walking around overweight, tired, with dry skin and a growing bald patch on your head.

If you are taking metformin, your doctor MUST NOT use TSH to find the right dose for you. He must use Free T3 and Free T4.

Thyroid and Male Infertility

Don’t ignore this post just because your husband’s TSH (or your TSH) came back within the normal range. Seriously. Keep reading.

Up until the early 90s researchers and doctors thought that the thyroid only affected female fertility. But a breakthrough study discovered that there are thyroid hormone receptors on the Sertoli Cells in the testes. Why is this important? The Sertoli Cells nourish sperm cells through the process of spermatogenesis. Here’s the best study I’ve found about the thyroid and sperm.

Long Time, No Post

I know, I know. Long time, no post. And I have no excuse, really. Except that infertility is emotionally draining and physically exhausting. The smallest stresses set me off lately.

I have written about twenty posts in my head. Maybe more.

Since my previous posts, we’ve been to Cornell in NYC to see Dr. Peter Schlegel (the world renowned expert for male infertility), spoken with Doug Carrell, Phd. in Salt Lake City, UT (world renowned expert in Andrology), and done an egg retrieval and freezing.

We’ve also discovered that Mr. E has Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and that he’s heterozygous for the MTHFR A1298C mutation.
